I’m gonna have to eat my words here. I’ll admit it: I was SUPER excited to hear Taylor Swift’s new music after a three year hiatus, and I was especially intrigued to see how she combated her ongoing feud with Kanye West and Katy Perry.
But when I first heard ‘Look What You Made Me Do,’ I cringed. “Oh Taylor,” I thought, “What you done?” Saying I hated the song is an understatement to how I felt. I loathed the new single.
That is until last night’s debut of the music video during the MTV VMAs. My jaw literally dropped. I got chills all over my body. (I just re watched the video for the 10th time - still got chills) Taylor Swift just achieved what I’m going to call the most epic comeback in music history.
Listen, the 27 year old pop star had a giant hurdle to overcome when reemerging in the spotlight. Her fans weren’t wrong in dubbing her a snake after the Kanye and Katy controversies. Her reputation was indeed dead. But instead of ignoring her downfalls, the criticism, and even her fans she full on embraced the persona thrust upon her. Just as a snake shed it’s skin, Taylor quite literally shed every image she ever embodied throughout her career - you clever, clever girl…
And while the music video was clear, The old Taylor Swift is dead, the most exciting thing about this narrative is that we’re not entirely sure what exactly this new Taylor will entail. “Reputation” will drop November 10th, and so will begin the new era of Ms. Swift. Taylor’s essentially got a clean slate and the world’s attention. What she showed us with “Look What You Made Me Do” is that she’s more aware of herself than ever before - so what will self aware, dark Taylor Swift look like? I’m very excited to find out.
